Bans And Litigations
A number of applications asking for a prohibition on the grounds of encouraging communal discord were filed at the Madras High Court, Kerala High Court, and the Supreme Court of India on the eve of the release. The courts rejected the petitions or decided not to hear them. On the other hand, all promotional materials—including the teaser—that purported that thirty-two thousand girls had actually converted to Islam and joined the Islamic State were to be removed from the film.
The film was banned on May 8 by the West Bengal government, which described it as “hate speech” and cited unfavorable intelligence reports indicating heightened tensions between different communities in the film’s audience. The prohibition was suspended after the filmmakers filed a challenge against the ruling at the Supreme Court. The insertion of two disclaimers, stating that the characters in the movie were fake and that the movie was a “fictionalized” depiction of actual events, was something the producers had to put up with.
Sen had denied rumors that the Kerala Story movie was prepared for streaming earlier in June 2023, stating that they had not received any proposals from OTT services that would have been appropriate. Kerala Story’s creators have further asserted that the movie business has “ganged up” on them in retaliation for their successful box office run. “But so far, we have not got any offer worth considering,” Sen had said to Rediff.
The movie business appears to be banding together to penalize us.” Sen had retorted, “Our box office success has annoyed many sections of the film industry,” when asked why he was being penalized. We feel like a faction inside the entertainment industry has banded together to penalize us for our achievements.
