Reunited with his country, Anrich Nortje will play in the 2024 T20 World Cup following a nine-month break. A member of South Africa’s 15-man squad that will be captained by Aiden Markram, Nortje has experience playing in the IPL 2024. Also deserving of call-ups and a chance to win their maiden T20I appearances are opener Ryan Rickelton and seamer Ottniel Baartman, who both excelled at the SA20 this year.
As the top run scorer in the SA20 and the runner-up in the most recent CSA T20 Challenge, Rickelton is expected to pair with Quinton de Kock at the top of the order.
De Kock was convinced to continue playing T20 Internationals for this tournament despite having retired from ODI cricket last year. The T20 World Cup may possibly mark his final international appearance. De Kock is now pursuing options in T20 competitions and is no longer centrally contracted by CSA.
Rob Walter, the white-ball coach, affirmed that de Kock has been selected based on past performances even if he hasn’t played well in his last three events. “Quinny, we’ve seen him do it time and time again for us,” Walter replied. “We’ve had some incredible performances from Reeza [Hendricks] in T20 cricket, and he was amazing in this domestic CSA T20 challenge once more. Ryan Rickelton has also had two very great contests where he’s played the kind of cricket we want to play. The next player on the list will be Aidan Markram, who will come in first. From Quinton’s perspective, it’s mostly a performance-based choice, and it’s based only on his true understanding of his abilities.”
The death overs have been taken into consideration when selecting Baartman, the second-highest wicket-taker at the SA20. “He’s been excellent for the past few years. But he stood out from the crowd, especially in the SA20. He demonstrated himself to be a very good death bowler, according to Walter. As the last several weeks in the IPL have shown, being able to handle death is going to be crucial, and he is someone who provides that expertise. The team consists of three spinners, Ngidi and Burger as traveling reserves, and four frontline seamers in Nortje, Baartman, Kagiso Rabada, and Gerald Coetzee. Tabraiz Shamsi, a wrist spinner, and left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin are on the team. Only Marco Jansen, an all-around player, was left in the running; Andile Phehlukwayo and Wiaan Mulder were not included.
