In the Maldives Election, the Pro-China Party is Expected to Win Handily

Maldives Election: The People’s National Congress (PNC), led by Mohamed Muizzu, President of Maldives secured 66 of the 86 seats that were proclaimed for the 93-member Parliament.

According to polls released on Sunday, Mohamed Muizzu, the pro-China president of the People’s National Congress (PNC) in the Maldives, won the parliamentary elections with a resounding majority. According to the nation’s election authority, Muizzu’s party won 66 of the 86 seats that were announced in the elections for the 93-member House.

Even though the results for the final seven seats are still pending, Muizzu’s PNC now has 19 seats more than the required majority of 47.

The overwhelming victory of Muizzu’s party suggests that the public is supporting the president’s political shift away from India and toward China. In order to avoid jeopardizing relations with his neighbor, President Muizzu, who was chosen in September of last year to succeed previous President Abdulla Yameen, had vowed to end the nation’s “India First” policy. Another pro-China leader, Abdulla Yameen, was set free last week after his 11-year sentence for corruption was overturned by a court.

After casting his ballot in Male, where he previously served as mayor, President Muizzu declared, “All citizens should come out and exercise their right to vote as soon as possible.” The vote on Sunday had no bearing on Muizzu’s position as President.

With only a few dozen seats in its coalition, the leading opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was facing an overwhelming defeat.

Maldives Election: “The Geography Compulsion, The History of the Relationship”

Since assuming office, Muizzu has ensured that India has evacuated the more than eighty Indian military soldiers stationed in the Maldives, a group of over 1,192 coral islands. The initial group of Indian staff members who were sent to the Maldives to staff aviation assets for disaster relief and humanitarian aid (HADR) returned to India last month. By the deadline of May 10th, the remaining will be moved.

This election, “in which President Muizzu has won a landslide victory, represents that the people of Maldives are properly behind him and democracy is clearly working in that country, or, as we say, this is the dance of democracy,” according to veteran diplomat and Gateway House Distinguished Fellow Rajiv Bhatia.

India’s only option at this point is to accept the outcomes. Since Muizzu is now very influential there and will be directing India’s foreign policy in the direction of China, that country will need to exercise extreme caution and caution,” he continued.

India Out campaign

Using the slogan “India out,” Muizzu, who took office late last year, charged that Solih, his predecessor, had undermined national sovereignty by giving India undue sway. When social media activists from India began to boycott Maldives travel, relations became even more strained. In response, three deputy ministers from the Maldives made disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had brought up the notion of boosting tourism in Lakshadweep, India’s own chain of islands that resembles the Maldives.

Indian tourists have decreased, according to new Maldives official statistics, moving their country down from the top spot to number six among foreign visitors.

During his prior visit to China this year, Muizzu successfully negotiated an increase in both the number of tourists and aircraft departing from China.
