James Anderson becomes the first pacer to reach 700 wickets in Test Cricket. James Anderson, 41, has become a member of the exclusive 700 Test wickets club, along with Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.
At the age of 41, James Anderson kept making history by becoming the first fast bowler to reach 700 Test wickets in the 147-year history of Test cricket. After making his Test debut in 2003, Anderson is one of the few players to reach 700 wickets in the longest version of the game, alongside players such as Shane Warner and Muttiah Muralitharan.
At the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, on Day 3 of the fifth Test match against India, Anderson achieved the milestone by dismissing Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep was drawn into the drive with an off-cutter that was thrown in the vicinity of the wicket. Ben Foakes completed the task behind the stumps when the ball gained the outside edge.
With 698 wickets in his account going into the fifth Test in Dharamsala, Anderson’s start with the ball was less than ideal as he was the victim of Shubman Gill’s masterpiece. Ultimately, though, the seasoned pacer prevailed over the youthful Indian player to record his own 699.
INDIA VS ENGLAND 5TH TEST 3RD DAY :
The great pacer found a way to hit the wood through the space between Shubman’s bat and pads. In the illustrious records books of Anderson, — gained the special name, therefore he had to wait a while to reach the historic 700th wicket.
Since Muralitharan and Warner were both under 40 when they became members of the coveted club, the 41-year-old is also the oldest bowler to do so. With this accomplishment, Anderson becomes the first bowler to reach 700 wickets in Test cricket history and only the third bowler overall. He is also the first pace bowler.
The only two individuals to have accomplished this accomplishment before Anderson are the late great Australian spinner Shane Warne and the renowned spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka.
At this stage, Anderson’s reputation as possibly the best speed bowler in Test cricket history had solidified. Throughout his Test career, the England bowler has claimed 32 five-wicket hauls. In 2017, he bowled 7/42, which was his best effort against the West Indies.
James Anderson’s 700th Wicket
Day 2 began with India cruising to a commanding 275-1, utterly crushing the Englishmen’s pitiful 218. Their batting tandem of Gill and Sharma looked excellent throughout the morning session.
In their match against India, Anderson’s two wickets were crucial to the game’s shift in momentum. He and his captain Ben Stokes, who performed a magic trick with the ball in his first delivery of the series, were the ones who eventually got the century-winning duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill off the crease.
However, Sarfaraz Khan, who also scored a brilliant fifty, and rookie Devdutt Padikkal helped India extend their innings once more.
If England wants to pursue and set a challenging target for the hosts in the second innings, they will be looking to restrict the flow of runs and get Indian hitters out quickly. And they will undoubtedly be hoping that the unwavering Anderson would spur the England team to yet another victory.
Sachinās Reaction to His 700th Wicket:
When Sachin Tendulkar watched Anderson play against Australia in 2002, he remarked about his initial impression of the player. “I saw Anderson play for the first time in Australia in 2002, and his ball control looked special,” he commented on X. In those days, Nasser Hussain was a great admirer of him, and he probably would say the same thing now: “Maine bola tha”āthat he had predicted the future so accurately. 700 wickets in Test cricket is an incredible feat. Before Anderson achieved it, it would have seemed impossible for a fast bowler to play for 22 years and be so reliable that he could collect 700 wickets. Amazingly wonderful! #INDvENG.
