What was Iran’s Warning to Israel about Review Nuclear Doctrine?

Iran’s Warning: If Israel Attacks, it will review “Nuclear Doctrine”

An IRGC official claims Iran has the knowledge necessary to attack the nuclear facilities of the Jewish state, amid expectations of Israeli retaliation for the attack.

As the globe prepares for an Israeli response to Tehran’s historic drone and missile attack on the country on April 13, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated on Thursday that Iran may reconsider its “nuclear doctrine” in response to Israeli threats to hit the nation.

Iran's Warning

Tehran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, a denial that is largely discounted by Israel and the Western world.

Ahmad Haghtalab, the head of the Guards responsible for nuclear security, was quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency as saying, “The threats of the Zionist regime against Iran’s nuclear facilities make it possible to review nuclear doctrine and deviate our previous considerations.” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, has the last decision over Tehran’s nuclear program, which the West believes has military overtones.

The timing of Israel’s planned invasion of Iran has not been confirmed by officials. Tehran, though, asserts that it is ready to strike back against Tel Aviv.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, stated in 2019 that although Iran could have created nuclear weapons, it would not have done so since Islam bans their use. The US and other Western nations have claimed that Iran’s growing nuclear program is indicative of war intentions.

Iran has threatened to retaliate against any Israeli attack on the republic, but Israel has not said when or how much it will respond.

At a G7 meeting of foreign ministers on Thursday, EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell said, “We are on the verge of a regional war in the Middle East,” and he urged Israel to provide “a restrained answer to the Iranians’ attack.”

Over the years, Netanyahu has made numerous threats to take action to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Targeting Iranian nuclear sites, according to a paper released this week by the US-based Arms Control Association, “would be a reckless and irresponsible escalation that increases the risk of a wider regional war… and is more likely to push Tehran to decide that developing nuclear weapons is necessary to deter future attacks”.

Since President Donald Trump unilaterally renounced the agreement Tehran had signed with international powers in 2018, slapping a series of sanctions on the country, Tehran and Washington have been embroiled in a nuclear crisis.

Iran accepted tight International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring guidelines and limitations on its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions under the terms of the 2015 agreement.

However, Tehran retaliated to Trump’s withdrawal of the US from the agreement by rapidly accelerating its program, erecting sophisticated centrifuges, and enriching uranium to 60% purity—the highest level Iran has ever achieved.

Experts generally define weapons-grade material as having 90% purity or higher, but Iran has already completed the most challenging technological hurdles to get there.

The Biden administration’s attempts to bring the 2015 agreement back to life failed, and Iran has now achieved the ability to make enough fissile material for one nuclear bomb in about two weeks.
