The only bright spot for Punjab Kings this season has been the unwavering performances of their unsung Indian players, Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh, who both bat lower in the order and have frequently had to make up for the shortcomings at the top. Their valiant efforts the other night gave MI  a serious scare.

IPL 2024: Match Summary

After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Punjab Kings had a strong start thanks to an opening partnership of 52 runs between captain Sam Curran and Prabhsimran Singh. But after that, the Gujarat Titans’ spinners choked their hitters till they were out of the game. They were first taken aback by the power play between Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan, an Afghan duo, before Sai Kishore took over. The Indian spinner finished with 4/33 as the Punjab Kings were dismissed for 142 runs in 20 overs.

Despite being one of the poorest batting teams this season when it comes to powerplay, Punjab Kings got off to a quick start, reaching 45 for no loss in five overs.

But after that, their innings took a turn for the worse as the opposition was exposed by the cunning of Rashid Khan (1/15), Sai Kishore (4/33), and Noor Ahmed (2/20), the spin three.

Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 21), who had been struggling, finally found some much-needed rhythm before he fell in the sixth over, setting off a stunning collapse.

Not long after Prabhsimran (2/32) had taken Mohit Sharma (2/32) for a six over third man, he raced down the wicket but was caught behind.

Then, the spin trio snapped Punjab’s batting line. Sai Kishore, a left-arm spinner who helped Tamil Nadu reach the Ranji Trophy semifinal this year, skillfully changed up his pace to put the opposition’s hitters on edge.

Through Rashid and Noor, pressure was also kept up from the opposite end.

Rilee Rossouw (9 off 7) became Noor’s first victim as she attempted a sweep shot and was trapped lbw. After captain Sam Curran (20 off 19) left Rashid in the next over, both he and his opponents were taken aback by the DRS call that declared him out.

When Rahul Tewatia, who was positioned at the first slip, attempted to work a Noor googly over mid-wicket, his English partner Liam Livingstone (6 off 9) got the better of him.

The uncapped pair of Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh were needed to do the heavy lifting, as has been the case frequently this season, but they fell cheaply this time, which made things worse for Punjab.

The hosts overcame the 140-run threshold with the help of Harpreet Brar (29 off 12).

PBKS VS GT

IPL 2024: PBKS vs. GT Final Over: Again, Rahul Tewatia finishes the match in his style.

When Arshdeep Singh bowls the last over, his first delivery is excessively straight. Tewatia wins it with a simple play down the leg side. The way they are playing right now, most teams in this league would have given up before the fifteenth over, but for some reason, they drag themselves to victory in a chase. The Titans’ argument is hardly compelling, but whatever it takes to restart their campaign, they won’t care how it plays out.
