The English football league system’s top division is called the English Premier League. It is contested by 20 clubs and uses the English Football League’s (EFL) promotion and relegation system. Every team plays 38 home and away games against every other team throughout the normal August–May season. With a few rare weekday evening matches, the majority of games take place in the afternoons on Saturdays and Sundays.
On February 20, 1992, the First Division (the premier league from 1888 until 1992) clubs decided to secede from the English Football League, which led to the creation of the FA Premier League. Teams might still be promoted from and demoted to the EFL Championship, though. The Premier League benefits from a £5 billion television rights agreement, with domestic rights to 128 and 32 games being secured by Sky and BT Group, respectively. The four seasons from 2025 to 2026 will see this agreement increase to £6.7 billion. From 2022 to 2025, the league is expected to receive $7.2 billion in foreign television rights.
Member clubs of the Premier League are shareholders in the corporation, which is run by a chief executive.A total of £2.4 billion in central payment earnings were distributed to clubs in 2016–17, and EFL clubs also received an additional £343 million in solidarity payments.

The scene was drastically different when the Premier League was established, with Leeds United becoming the final champions of the former First Division. They now find themselves among other clubs that have experienced Premier League top-tier action but are currently playing outside of the division.
The 1992–93 campaign marked the beginning of Manchester United’s real comeback under Sir Alex Ferguson, as the team won its first championship in 26 years. Aston Villa, Norwich, Blackburn, and QPR completed the top five. It would be the first of a record 13 Premier League titles. After that, United would win four of the first five Premier League titles; however, in the 1994–1995 season, big-spending Blackburn Rovers ended their run.
Longtime adversaries of the Red Devils in sports With 18 league titles under their belt, Liverpool is among the most successful teams in England, yet United supporters made fun of them for failing to win the Premier League. But in 2019–20, after Jurgen Klopp’s team won the Premier League for the first time, that all changed. After Arsenal’s turnaround led them to victory in the 1997–98 season, they became the third different club to win the Premier League trophy. This marked the start of a protracted rivalry between the Red Devils as they fought it out for supremacy over the following seven years.
After Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea in 2003, the Russian threw money into the Stamford Bridge team and won the 2004–05 championship, ushering in a new era of previously unheard-of expenditure. The second team to defy the status quo was Manchester City, who won their first Premier League championship in 2011–12 after reaping the rewards of a takeover as well.
Up to Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, when they won the title, United was the only team that consistently achieved success. After that, they began to decline. Nouveau riche Chelsea and Manchester City, who together won nine titles out of a possible twelve between 2010–11 and 2022–23, have filled the hole.
