India’s first under-river metro tunnel was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata today, March 6. The metro tunnel that connects Howrah Maidan and Esplanade to Kolkata’s Hooghly River has been constructed. Following the inaugural event, schoolchildren and PM Modi rode the metro from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. Schoolchildren had expressed delight at riding on India’s first underwater metro service with PM Modi prior to the inauguration. A sizable contingent of admirers also greeted him with raucous cries of “Jai Shree Ram” and “Modi Modi.”

The inaugural event, which was witnessed by Bengal Governor Dr. CV Ananda Bose in addition to other notable figures, commemorates the historic April 2023 trial run by the Kolkata Metro of an underwater train, which was the first of its kind in India. Students from different schools were also visible while riding the first subway, making for an intriguing sight.

The bottom part of the recently built tunnel is 26 meters below the river’s surface, and trains are scheduled to run 16 meters below the riverbed. This is the first transportation project in India with a metro train that passes under a river.
